A Career in... Hospitality

The Hospitality sector is all around us, there is no escaping it! From cafes to fine dining restaurants, night clubs to cruise ships, hotels to student accommodation, the opportunities for people making memories again in small groups will be an important way forward.

The HND Hospitality Management gives you the opportunity to study and learn a diverse range of skills, including food service, knowledge of alcoholic beverages, human resources, front office and accommodation studies and other managerial areas.

The lecturers on the course offer a range of skills and insights on what it is like to be involved in the industry whether in international hotels, other accommodation operations and food and beverages businesses, you will find soon enough that studying hospitality is not a ‘one track’ career route, there are many opportunities – in fact, you will soon realise it is a passport to travel and develop life skills, which are extremely transferrable!

Gordon McIntyre, shares his thoughts on studying hospitality and tourism and how the industry will bounce back bigger and better than before.

HND Hospitality Management

The course focuses on the practicalities of learning about the wider hospitality industry:-

  • Gain food service experience in Scholars restaurant, which holds an AA rosette with ‘Highly Commended’ status.
  • We've been awarded the People 1st International Gold Accreditation for Hospitality and Culinary Arts provision and in addition, we've been recognised as a Centre of Excellence for Food & Beverage Service, Patisserie & Confectionery, and Front Office & Reception.  You'll be learning at a world-class college recognised as excellent by industry.
  • Develop skills in operating ‘OPERA”, the industry standard hotel front office system.
  • Visits to many hospitality venues around the city.
  • Gain opportunities for part-time and full-time employment in establishments around Scotland.
  • Visit a whisky distillery and cellars of venues selling and storing ales correctly.
  • Opportunities to apply for additional support, from HIT Scotland, Grocer Company of Glasgow, Incorporation of Maltmen.
  • Attend career events in the college and network with employers.
  • Career talks from universities and guest lecturers, including previous students of the college.

After the Course

On completion of the HND course, you can stay on at the college and follow the Napier University Degree with us at City Campus or apply for university:-

  • BA in International Hospitality (Napier), delivered here at City of Glasgow College or in Edinburgh (direct entry to 3rd year).
  • BA in Hospitality Management Robert Gordon University (direct entry to 3rd year).

If you decide to apply for a job when you finish your course you could apply for positions as a Restaurant Supervisor, Assistant Manager of a small venue, Food Server, Bar Supervisor, Receptionist, Accommodation Supervisor.

News

  • We were delighted to be awarded People 1st International’s hospitality accreditation. This award recognises colleges that deliver excellent full-time or classroom-based hospitality training and qualifications. The accreditation also highlights colleges that are working well with employers – allowing them to influence the curriculum so it meets industry needs, and develops partnerships that benefit learners. 
  • We were also awarded the following Centres of Excellence statuses to sit alongside the accreditation:- Food & Beverage Service, Patisserie & Confectionary and Front Office & Reception. So you can be sure if you study at City of Glasgow College you'll be getting a world-class education recognised by the industry.
  • This year the college restaurant Scholars was awarded “Highly Commended” status along with an AA rosette for service and its food. A fantastic achievement which makes it the only college restaurant in Scotland to hold this accolade, a great tribute to the staff in the hospitality and professional cookery teams.
  • Simona Federova, HND Hospitality Management (2nd year) won a gold medal at WorldSkills UK LIVE in 2019. She is currently part of Squad UK who are training towards the WorldSkills international event in Shanghai, China. Good Luck Simona.
  • Alex Dick, HND Hospitality Management won Front of House in the prestigious Nestle Toque D’or 2020 competition, regarded as the top student competition in the UK.  Alex was also part of the team that won the Royal Naval Cook and Serve Challenge, a competition against five other teams from college and the Royal Navy.
