Deck Cadetship

If you are thinking about a career in the Merchant Navy as a Deck Officer we have a full range of courses to get you started on your career path.  There are different starting points depending on your qualifications and even an Access course if you don't have the required qualifications.  Please note that in order to join the Merchant Navy you must be able to pass an ENG1 medical examination

Access to the Maritime Industry (SCQF 5) - This course is designed for students who have achieved National 4's at school or who would like to pursue a career at sea as an Officer, but do not yet meet the academic requirements for company selection.  This college course will give you the minimum academic requirements to apply for an HNC Cadet Programme through a sponsoring company or training provider. 

NC Shipping and Maritime Operations (SCQF 6) - This course is designed for students who have achieved National 5's at school or who would like to pursue a career at sea as an Officer.  This course will provide you with the necessary academics and exposure to the industry in order to apply for the SPD Cadet Programme through a sponsoring company or training provider. 

Company Sponsored Courses 

HNC Deck Cadet Programme (SCQF 7)- This course forms part of the Education & Training requirements to complete the Deck Officer of the Watch (OOW) training programme and is aimed at cadets who have achieved National 5's at school or who have completed an appropriate access programme.  Applications for this programme should be made through an appropriate sponsor.  

SPD Deck Cadet Programme  (SCQF 9) - This course forms part of the Education & Training requirements to complete the Deck Officer of the Watch (OOW) training programme and is aimed at cadets who have achieved Highers at school or who have scored highly on an NC Shipping and Maritime Operations qualification.  Applications for this programme should be made through an appropriate sponsor.   

OOW Unlimited Superyacht Cadetship - You will gain an Officer of the Watch Unlimited Certificate of Competency as well as the academic award ‘Scottish Professional Diploma in Marine Operations’ in your time at City of Glasgow College. As part of your sea time, you will also gain valuable experience on a superyacht through our training partner Trinity House which will enhance your future career prospects. 

International partnerships 

HND Nautical Science (International Partnerships) (SCQF 8)- This training scheme is run in partnership with a number of colleges throughout the world and requires attendance at our partner colleges and completion of the HND at City of Glasgow College.
