Freya - City of Glasgow College

Freya Murphy began her Modern Apprenticeship in SVQ Business and Administration in November 2017 while still in sixth year at school. Although she enjoyed school, she was ready for a new challenge and a fresh start.

“I wanted to work, earn my own money and do something different. As soon as I came to the College for my interview, I knew this was where I wanted to be.”

Starting at reception, Freya admits she was nervous, from the size of the building to interacting with people from all walks of life. But with the support of the reception team, she quickly found her feet.

“The biggest challenge was becoming independent so suddenly. I was shy at first and even got the giggles speaking to people at the desk, but over time my confidence grew.”

Through her apprenticeship, Freya developed strong communication skills and learned how to support and reassure others — particularly young applicants who reminded her of her own first day nerves.

The support around her made all the difference.

“The reception team was incredibly patient, and my assessor regularly checked in to support my progress. I always felt like people genuinely wanted me to succeed.”

After completing her apprenticeship, Freya successfully applied for a full-time receptionist role and remained in the department for almost eight years. Recently, she took the next step in her career, moving into a PA role within the College’s executive department.

“Taking that step was scary, but exciting. Just a few months in, I already feel supported and at home. I wouldn’t have considered leaving the College - the support, job security and benefits here are fantastic.”

Freya says she’s most proud of pushing herself outside her comfort zone and would encourage others to do the same.

“Go for it. An apprenticeship gives you the best of both worlds — gaining a qualification while building confidence and experience at the same time.”
