Sanitary Products (Free)

Free Sanitary Products

In response to the Scottish Government’s commitment to menstrual dignity, City of Glasgow College has introduced free sanitary products at both of our campuses in the City Centre. Dispensers were fitted in August 2018 and are filled with both sanitary pads and tampons for individuals who need them. Menstrual cups and reusable pants are also available in the toilets located in Core D (main lifts) at City Campus and to pick up from the Students' Association at Riverside Campus. There is no restriction on how many products you can take.

Locations

  • City Campus - products are available in female, gender neutral and accessible toilets across the campus. Toilets can be identified by the pink teardrop sticker at the doors.
  • Riverside Campus - products are available in the accessible toilets at Riverside. Toilets can be identified by the pink teardrop sticker at the doors.

Hey Girls and My Period recently launched the Pick Up My Period App. The App has nearly 1500 locations across Scotland where members of the public can collect free period products as part of the Period Provision Act.

Important Information on Toxic Shock Syndrome

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by bacteria getting into the body and releasing harmful toxins. It's often associated with tampon use in young women, but it can affect anyone of any age – including men and children.

TSS gets worse very quickly and can be fatal if not treated promptly. But if it's diagnosed and treated early on, most people will make a full recovery.

More information on TSS is available on the NHS website.

Statement on Exercise of Functions for the Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act 2021

The Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act 2021 was passed by the Scottish Parliament on 24th November 2020. The Act requires the College to provide period products free of charge to anyone who needs them. A range of products should be available to provide choice and should be easy to access to maintain a person’s dignity. Please read our Statement on Exercise of Functions which outlines how we intend to meet the requirements of the Act to meet our legal duties.
