For Ewan, school never felt like the right fit. He left at 16 looking for something more hands-on and creative and found that at City of Glasgow College.
âI was drawn to the college because the courses were practical and genuinely interesting. They focused on real skills that actually connected to working in the industry. I hoped to figure out what might be âmy thingâ and while I didnât find it right away, the experience opened my eyes to a world of creative industries I hadnât realised I could be part of.â
That spark became a passion during his final-year HND Television project. With access to the collegeâs TV studio, he and his team created a pilot for a new comedy panel show - complete with set design, production, and post production. The project earned a BAFTA New Talent nomination and opportunities to pitch to major UK broadcasters.
âIt was a defining moment. I realised we werenât just students; we were capable of creating industry-standard work.â
Ewan credits tutors, classmates, and the freedom to experiment as key influences. âIt was the first place where I was encouraged to try bold, even weird ideas. That freedom to fail and create without fear was unbelievably powerful.â
Since graduating, Ewan has worked on projects recognised by BAFTA and the Royal Television Society, and his college experience continues to shape his approach. âThe college helped me get my foot in the door through work placements, and Iâve never forgotten that. Itâs why I now try to offer the same support and mentoring to new entrants in the industry, paying it forward.â
His journey hasnât been without challenges. âBut what got me through was how much I loved the course content and how supported I felt by my lecturers. Having access to real, industry-grade equipment made a huge difference, too.â
Now an established creative, Ewanâs proudest achievements include working on award-winning productions and recognising that success doesnât belong only to the stars. âThose awards arenât just shiny things on a shelf. They reflect the heart, soul, and long hours that everyone - not just actors - puts into making something meaningful.â
âSay yes to everything. Throw yourself into opportunities. You never know what could come of them.â
Looking ahead, Ewan hopes the college continues to be a launchpad for talent. âI want to see City of Glasgow College keep doing what it does best, preparing students for real jobs in real industries.â
âI just want to keep telling great stories, whether theyâre big or small.
