Our Wellbeing A to Z offers specific information, organisations and resources about various issues that can affect wellbeing. We welcome feedback from our students on our materials and encourage you to get in touch if there are any resources that have been particularly helpful or you would like to see more of.  

A

Abortion

  • Glasgow Pregnancy Choices - Confidential emotional support, information and advice after any baby loss including abortion and miscarriage.
  • ARCH Trust - (Abortion Recovery Care and Helpline) National organisation offering support and counselling. 

Abuse (physical, sexual, emotional, cyber)

If you have experienced abuse or are worried about someone else’s safety please reach out and speak to someone. If you feel you can’t talk to people you know, speak in confidence to one of the services here. 

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 999.

  • AMIS (Abused Men In Scotland) provides support for men experiencing domestic violence, including helpline support to get advice as well, as finding local support groups. 
  • Bridge to Support is a free counselling service for survivors of abuse by Jesuit and their staff. Email - bridgetosupport@health-in-mind.org.uk
  • Fear Free (Scotland) support people experiencing domestic abuse in Scotland who identify as a man (including trans men) or from the LGBT+ community.
  • Galop is the LGBT+ anti-violence charity. They support all LGBT+ people who've experienced hate crime, domestic abuse or sexual violence.
  • Health in Mind offers counselling for all adult survivors (18+) of all child abuse including sexual abuse who live in and around Edinburgh. This is a pay per session service and you will need to get in touch to ask about session prices. Email - counselling@health-in-mind.org.uk
  • HStar Scotland offers free counselling and other support for women in Scotland aged 16+ who have experienced trauma and/or abuse at any point in their lives. Therapy offered in up to 12 different languages. 
  • NSPCC offers information and advice on different types of abuse, how to spot the signs and what you can do to help keep yourself or others safe.
  • Scottish Women's Aid offers advice and information for any woman experiencing domestic abuse. You can call, email or chat online 24 hours a day. 
  • Scottish Woman’s Rights Centre provide free legal information, advice, representation and advocacy support to self-identifying women in Scotland affected by violence and abuse.
  • Suzy Lamplugh Trust offers support and advice for anyone affected by harassment including a National Stalking Helpline.
  • Talk Now is a free counselling service for people aged 18+ affected by all types of abuse, includes support for family members.
  • Trauma Counselling Line Scotland is a free counselling service provided by Health in Mind for anyone over 16 who experienced abuse in their childhood and is from minority ethnic community, has a disability and lives in remote/rural areas (local authority areas listed on website). They offer telephone and video counselling in different languages. Email - counselling@health-in-mind.org.uk
  • Victim Support can provide advice and support to cope and move forward from stalking
  • Youngminds offers support and guidance to anyone suffering abuse and for parents.
  • YoungMinds Messenger - free 24 hour crisis support across the UK. You can text "YM" to 85258 for free and you will be connected to a volunteer in 5-10 minutes. This is a text service and you can remain anonymous.

Alcohol

  • Adfam provides information for families affected by drug and alcohol use and can help them access a range of support options, including local support groups across the UK.
  • Al-Anon offers local support groups across the UK for anyone affected by a friend or relative’s alcohol misuse
  • Drinkchat provided by Drinkaware is a free confidential chat service for anyone concerned about their own or others alcohol use.
  • Drinkline is a support and advice line if you are concerned about your drinking. Opening hours 7 days a week from 8am to 11pm: 0800 7 314 314.
  • Glasgow Council on Alcohol operate across Glasgow; providing alcohol counselling, training, prevention and education, group work, support, advice and information. You can call them on 0141 353 1800.
  • RCA Trust offers support for anyone experiencing alcohol addiction including counselling and group work.

Anxiety and Panic

  • Anxiety UK work to relieve and support those living with anxiety and anxiety-based depression by providing information, support and understanding via an extensive range of services, including therapy. The service is free to an extent or you can pay to become a member from £30/year student membership.
  • BBC Radio One Decompression Sessions feature a session with expert Stuart Sandeman on how to use breathing to help address anxiety, with some calming music to set the mood. 
  • Mind explains anxiety and panic attacks, including possible causes and how you can access treatment and support. Includes tips for helping yourself, and guidance for friends and family.
  • Mind: Panic - provides information on anxiety and panic attacks including possible causes, support and guidance.
  • No Panic is a charity who support sufferers of Panic Attacks, Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and other anxiety-related disorders. They also provide support for carers of people who suffer from anxiety disorders.

Anger

  • Mind explains anger, giving practical suggestions for what you can do and where you can go for support. Also includes advice for friends and family.

Autism

  • Scottish Autism provide children (5-19 yrs old) and adult services (20+) including outreach, respite and supported living options. Their website includes a range of information on emotional and practical support.
  • National Autistic Society provides a range of projects and services including information and advice, supported living, specialist education and help into employment.
  • Scottish Women’s Autism Network (SWAN) offers online-based support for woman and girls with autism, including information, advice and peer support. 

ADHD

  • Scottish ADHD Coalition aims to promote and advocate on behalf members to help increase resources and support for people living with ADHD. They host local support groups for adults, families and children.

B

Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities

  • Amina empowers and supports Muslim and BME women in Scotland with support services including a helpline, befriending, social and creative activities, financial advice and employability support. 
  • Black Minds Matter UK aim to connect Black individuals and families with free professional mental health services across the UK.
  • Student Hut has a variety of resources and information for students, in particular how to maintain good mental health. This section focuses on Black British mental health services that can offer support if you're currently struggling.
  • FORWARD is the African women-led women's rights organisation working to end violence against women and girls. Helpline, information and access to emotional support. 
  • Intercultural Youth Scotland: Specialised mental health support for Black and POC youth. Open to 12-24 year olds. They also have other great supports.
  • Muslim Community Helpline is a confidential, non-judgemental listening & emotional support service.
  • Saheliya is a specialist mental health and well-being support organisation for black, minority ethnic, asylum seeker, refugee and migrant women and girls (12+) in the Edinburgh and Glasgow area. Offers different services including counselling and social activities. 
  • The What? Centre - aims to support young people with furthering their understanding of race, culture and identity in relation to mental health, in order to empower young people.
  • Youth Community Support Agency (YCSA) offers free counselling and other support services for Black and Minority Ethnic young people aged 10-25. Also provides support for parents of young people. E: enquiries@ycsa.org.uk

Bereavement (including death of Pets)

  • Cruse Bereavement Support Scotland offers support including helpline, live chat, counselling and information for anyone affected by the death of someone they know. 
  • The Compassionate Friends provide one-to-one support, local support groups and produce a range of publications for parents, children, grandparents and professionals, as well as a website specifically for people dealing with the death of a brother or sister.
  • Way Widowed & Young offers support and friendship to bereaved men and women up to the age of 50, parents and those without children.
  • SOBS - Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide supports those bereaved by the suicide of a close relative or friend, aiming to provide a safe, confidential environment in which bereaved people can share their experiences and feelings, so giving and gaining support from each other.
  • Grief Works outlines the 8 Pillars of Strength that can help in coping with grief and bereavement. 
  • Blue Cross are a pet charity looking after the welfare of our animals. They provide a free talking service for those grieving for the loss of a pet. You can contact them via email or through their confidential online form.​
  • Let’s Talk About Loss offers supportive meet-ups to help people aged 18-35 cope with their grief.

Books

Bullying  (including cyberbullying and stalking)

  • Bully Busters provides information and practical advice on bullying for children, young people, parents and professionals as well as free helpline support.
  • Childline is a free confidential service for anyone up to 25 years old. You can access support through telephone, online chat and email.
  • City of Glasgow College Policy on Bullying and Harassment  
  • National Bullying Helpline is a nationally recognised advice centre for bullying and aims to eradicate anti-social behaviour. Check out their advice and information on social media and cyber bullying.
  • NSPCC offers information and advice on bullying and cyber bullying, how to spot the signs and what you can do to help keep yourself or others safe.
  • Respectme is Scotland’s anti-bullying service offering guidance and resources for parents, carers and young people.

Cancer

  • Cancer Support Scotland offers free counselling, mindfulness and complementary therapies for people living with cancer and any friends or family affected by their illness.
  • Macmillan provides information and support including counselling and meetings for people affected by cancer. The service can be accessed through a helpline or online chat.
  • Maggie’s offers support for people living with cancer and their friends and families. Support includes support groups, creative therapies, workshops and information. Maggie’s have care and support centres at various locations, many near cancer treatment centres. 

Carers

  • Carers Scotland work as part of Carers UK to give advice, support and information on carer services, benefits and community care for those caring for a loved one.
  • GAMH Young Carers supports people aged 12 to 21 caring for a family member with a mental health problem by providing one to one and group programmes around Glasgow
  • Please speak to a Student Advisor for additional support and signposting.

Chronic Illness and Health Conditions

  • Asthma and Lung UK offers helpline and online support for anyone affected by a breathing condition. 
  • Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland offers online and helpline support for anyone affected by a chest, heart or stroke condition. 
  • Chronic Pain and Counselling article by Counselling Directory gives an overview of different illnesses and some suggestions of coping strategies including how counselling can benefit.
  • CISFA UK provides an online and in-person community to adults and teenagers suffering from a chronic illness to feel heard, safe and understood.
  • Endometriosis UK provides free support, information and a safe community for those affected by endometriosis. Helpline 0808 808 2227
  • Fibromyalgia Action UK helps support and signpost resources for people affected by fibromyalgia. National Helpline 0300 999 3333 (10am - 4pm Mon - Fri)
  • Herpes Virus Association offers information and advice on herpes simplex, especially genital herpes and shingles.
  • Lupus UK supports people with systemic lupus and discoid lupus and assisting those approaching diagnosis
  • Pain Association Scotland is an organisation that has pioneered the development and delivery of self-management training for those with Chronic Pain. You can self-refer by Freephone: 0800 783 6059 or Email: info@painassociation.com
  • Pain UK is an alliance of charities providing a voice for people in pain. They have a huge directory of support services you can choose from and contact.
  • TalkTime Scotland is a free counselling service for 12-25 year-olds in Scotland who are physically disabled or have long-term physical health conditions.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • Breathing Space Living Life provides a free Cognitive Behavioural Therapy telephone counselling service for mild/moderate issues including anxiety and depression.
  • GetSelfHelp provides self-directed CBT toolkits and resources to help with different issues such as anxiety, stress and depression. 

College Support

  • Support & Wellbeing Team offer a range of supports including tips on finances, maintaining a healthy wellbeing and practical advice. Our Support and Wellbeing YouTube channel has videos on different issues students may be facing.
    • Student Mental Health Team offer counselling, group work and mental health support for all students. Check out our services here.

Covid-19 (Coronavirus)

 

  • British Lung Foundation - offer telephone support to speak to a respiratory specialist trained to help you with Long Covid breathlessness.
  • Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland’s Advice Line nurses provide confidential advice, support and information to help people living with long COVID, or their family members. Freephone: 0808 801 0899 or text NURSE to 66777.
  • FutureLearn provide youth mental health courses to explore and understand the mental health issues that affect young people. The University of Reading has developed the COVID-19: Helping Young People Manage Low Mood and Depression course for young people with low mood and depression and their parents and carers, or anyone who has contact with young people during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Managing the long-term effects of COVID-19 - Download SIGN (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network) booklet explaining symptoms, treatment and support from Covid-19 and Long Covid. 
  • Mind shares advice and support for working in a pandemic including tips on working from home, coping with redundancy and returning to work and dealing with burnout.

Depression and low mood

  • Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) supporting men with depression and/or at risk of suicide.  Online, helpline and live chat services.
  • CrossReach Bluebell Perinatal service offers therapy for families or carers expecting a baby or with a child aged under 2. 
  • Mind provides information about depression, its symptoms and possible causes, and how you can access support. Includes tips on caring for yourself, and guidance for friends and family.
  • PANDAS - provides support groups and a helpline to access information on support services available for Post Natal and Pre-natal Depression.
  • Self-compassion by Dr Kristen Neff provides information on what self-compassion is and exercises on how we can develop our own self-compassion which could be helpful in dissolving self-critical and negative thoughts.
  • Students against depression is an online self-hel resource.
  • Time Out Scotland (support group).

Disability

  • Speak to a Learning Support Advisor about accessing suitable support within the college.

Drugs

  • BEAT is the UK’s leading eating disorder charity providing one to one, group and online support for young people, adults and their families.  
  • Connect-Eating Disorders: An NHS service that works closely with professionals, young people and their families to ensure treatment for anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders. T: 0141 277 7504
  • Mind - Eating Disorders: Educational reading from Mind Charity explaining possible causes of eating problems, support you can access and guidance for family and friends.
  • SupportED community eating disorder charity by the Linda Tremble Foundation is a charity supporting people suffering from an eating disorder, their families and carers. They offer confidential support groups and resources. 
  • Talking Eds provides psychotherapy, counselling, mental health support, training, education, consultancy, networking and awareness for eating disorders, disordered eating and problems with food/eating.
  • Young People with an Eating Disorder CARED aims to address the sense of burden and isolation parents & carers may feel, improve confidence and provide practical hints & tips.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

  • NHS  provides general information on Female genital mutilation (FGM) and how you can access help and support.
  • NSPCC is a leading charity protecting the lives of children and young people from abuse, providing support for parents, children and young people who have experiences of FGM.
  • You can use our Report and Support tool to report something that has happened. Our online Report and Support tool provides a straightforward way to report any inappropriate behaviour; whether it is gender-based violence, harassment or any other form of discrimination. You can report anonymously or provide your name and contact details to be kept informed of the next steps and to receive the support you require.

  • National Debt Line provides free debt advice and support.
  • Gamcare provides free information, advice and support for anyone affected by problem gambling.
  • RCA Trust offers support for anyone experiencing gambling addiction including counselling and group work. 

Gaming

There are lots of positives to Gaming but there can also be downsides. If you have concerns about your own gaming habits our Let's Talk Blurred Lines between Gaming and Gambling video has more information and where you can get support.

Gender based violence (see also Abuse and Sexual Assault)

  • Abused Men In Scotland (AMIS) provides emotional and practical support for men over 16 years old experiencing domestic violence. 
  • NSPCC is a leading charity protecting the lives of children and young people from abuse.
  • Rape Crisis Scotland provides emotional and practical support for anyone who has been affected by sexual violence.
  • Report a Concern in college - information and support and how you can report a concern in college.
  • Scottish Women’s Aid offers advice and information for any women experiencing domestic abuse. You can call, email or chat online 24 hours a day. 
  • Wellbeing Scotland is a trauma counselling service based in different areas of Scotland. Their service requires a self-referral

Homelessness

  • Simon Scotland provide support to people to resolve their homelessness. You can call them on 0800 0277466 (open 24 hours). Even if you aren't homeless at the moment but are worried about housing you can ring for advice.
  • Glasgow Winter Night offer emergency accommodation at 35 East Campbell Street, G1 5DT. Doors will open at 10pm every night until 8am.
  • The Marie Trust - offers counselling and crisis intervention services for people experiencing homelessness. 

Homesick

Helplines

  • NHS Mental Health helpline - Call 111 and choose ‘Option 2’ to be put through to the Mental Health Hub and speak to a trained mental health worker.
  • Breathing Space is a free confidential wellbeing phone service for anyone in Scotland. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday 6pm to 2am, weekends & Friday 6pm to Monday 6am. Visit their website or call them on 0800 83 85 87
  • Breathing Space Interpretation Service for BSL users. Opening hours between Monday to Friday 6pm to midnight, Saturday and Sunday 8am to midnight.
  • Samaritans provide 24/7 emotional support on 116 123.
  • SignHealth is The Deaf Health Charity. If you are deaf and experiencing a crisis, text DEAF to 85258 for free and immediate support.
  • YoungMinds Messenger provides free 24-hour crisis support across the UK. You can text "YM" to 85258 and you will be connected to a volunteer in 5-10 minutes. Texts are free from EE, O2, Vodaphone, Three, BT, Virgin, GiffGaff, Tesco and Telecom Plus. This is a text service and you can remain anonymous.

  • City SA: Students Association LGBTQIA+ resource hub.
  • Deaf Rainbow UK provides information and resources for Deaf LGBTIQIA+ people.
  • Fear Free (Scotland) support people experiencing domestic abuse in Scotland who identify as a man (including trans men) or from the LGBT+ community.
  • Galop is the LGBT+ anti-violence charity. They support all LGBT+ people who've experienced hate crime, domestic abuse or sexual violence
  • Hidayah provides support and guidance for LGBTQI+ Muslims.
  • Kinder Better Stronger provides information and advice to LGBTQ+ people about alcohol and drugs, as well as where to get help and support in Glasgow (and beyond).
  • LGBT Health and Wellbeing is a charity offering counselling in Glasgow and Edinburgh areas for LGBT people to work through issues with a trained volunteer counsellor. You can access the service if you are questioning your sexuality or gender identity, or not using labels for either. They accept donations for services.
  • LGBT Scotland provides information and emotional support to LGBT people and their families, friends and supporters in Scotland. ​
  • LGBT Youth is Scotland’s national charity for LGBTI young people between 13-25 years old. They offer online, one to one and group supports.  
  • Mermaids UK - Online community for trans young people (13-25), webchat, email and helpline services available. 
  • Non- Binary Scotland Facebook group offer support and social opportunities for people who either self-identify as non-binary or are questioning.  This is a closed and private group you must request to join.
  • Parapride makes life more accessible for LGBTQIA+ disabled people. Through events, workshops and research, they advocate for the LGBTQIA+ disabled community and their allies.
  • Pink Therapy offers UK wide specialist therapy services for LGBT people.
  • Rainbow Therapy offers a Scotland wide directory of therapists who specialise in counselling for LGBTQIA+. They have good materials and resources including Trans Support links.
  • Sandyford Counselling provides counselling to individuals who have sexual or reproductive health issues or concerns which are affecting their psychological sexual wellbeing.  
  • Scottish Trans work to improve gender identity and gender reassignment equality, rights and inclusion in Scotland.
  • Stonewall exists to empower LGBT communities.
  • Trans Masculine Scotland is a support group run by, and for, the trans masculine community. Meet-ups are both in-person and online
  • TransUnite (UK) is an online platform to find local support groups for trans, gender non-conforming & gender fluid people.

Loneliness (see also Relationships)

  • Girlfriends Social is a free website connecting women with new female friends from around the world in a safe environment.
  • Mind shares practical tips to help manage feelings of loneliness, and other places you can get support.
  • Mind - Loneliness: Educational reading from Mind Charity outlining suggestions for what you can do and where to go for support. 
  • Meet Up is a platform to meet new people with similar interests in your area, or to learn new things, find supports and push yourself out your comfort zone.
  • Mums Meet Up connects mums locally and across UK and provides online resources and parenting tips
  • Self-Harm UK offers support, guidance and information to all young people. Check out their advice on coping with loneliness.
  • The SilverLine is the only free confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people
  • Web Of Loneliness raises awareness, providing general information and offers an online platform to connect with other people.
  • You can connect with others in Glasgow at Kinning Park Home Complex which offers a range of services and project in the Southside of Glasgow.

Mindfulness

  • Mindful aims to help anyone who wants to explore more about mindfulness through helping get started, how to practice and exercises to try.   
  • Mental Health Foundation Podcasts for Your Wellbeing offers different Mindfulness breathing exercises, guided meditations, exercises to help aid sleep, reduce stress and improve overall physical and mental wellbeing.  
  • The college offers Mindfulness sessions during the academic year. See Services We Offer for more information.

Menstruation

Menstrual cycles can affect our mental health due to hormonal changes. Find out more about the myths, misconceptions, truths and realities of the relationship between mental health and your menstrual cycle.

City of Glasgow College has a partnership with Hey Girls to deliver free sanitary products to all our students - Order free sanitary products.

Mental Health

If you are experiencing mental health difficulties, please contact your GP who can make a referral to Community Mental Health Services in your local area.

  • Bipolar Scotland is a charity working to enable people affected by bipolar disorder / manic depression to take control of their lives. They offer self-help groups, resources and guidance.
  • Florence Street Mental Health Resource Centre: Provides care and treatment for adults with moderate to severe mental health problems and advice and support for service users and their carers. T: 0141 232 7000.
  • Mind – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Educational reading from Mind Charity outlining possible causes, what you can do and where to go for support.

  • PSTD: Combat Stress (Veterans) offers support and treatment to former servicemen with mental health problems. 
  • Rethink - Borderline Personality (Emotionally Unstable Personality): Factsheets on information, symptoms, causes and supports for anyone affected by BPD.
  • Rethink is a mental health charity, works to help everyone affected by severe mental illness recover a better quality of life. Telephone 0300 5000 927 for advice, local support groups, information on rights and benefits and information for carers.
  • SANEline is a national out-of-hours mental health helpline offering specialist emotional support, guidance and information to anyone affected by mental illness, including family, friends and carers. They are open every day of the year from 4.30pm to 10.30pm on 0300 304 7000.  
  • Scottish Association for Mental Health provides different services around Scotland including peer support, employability, mental health outreach and addictions for anyone affected by mental health issues.  
  • Stem4 is a charity that promotes positive mental health in teenagers and those who support them including their families and carers, education professionals, as well as school nurses and GPs through the provision of mental health education, resilience strategies and early intervention.
  • Student Hut has a variety of resources and information for students, in particular how to maintain good mental health.
  • The BRIDGE Project explores the possibility of providing a treatment programme for 14-24yr olds with symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in the general population, who may or may not be accessing any mental health services. 
  • The Coach House Trust offers support to people 16 or over with mental health issues, addictions, and or learning disabilities. We offer gardening, computing, music, art, healthy eating and nutrition workshops.
  • Time and Space is a free service for those who are troubled by voices (auditory hallucinations) and their families.

  • Kidscape:  Provides children, families, carers and professionals with advice, training and practical tools to prevent bullying and protect young lives.
  • Parentline Scotland: Whatever it is that affects your family, you can talk it over with Parentline. They can offer support by phone, email and text. 
  • ​Online Safety: It can be hard to know how to talk to your child about online safety. From setting up parental controls to advice on sexting, online games and video apps, NSPCC can help you to understand the risks and keep your child safe.  
  • Parenting a teenager - As a parent or carer your child’s adolescence can be a tricky transitional period. This article gives you some tips on how to support your child while also looking out for signs that their mood changes are normal or that they could benefit from support.

  • Mental Health Foundation has lots of different wellness podcasts and psychoeducational discussions on important topics such as anxiety, how to cope with uncertainty, being kind to ourselves, coping with suicidal thoughts and sleep.

Post and Pre-Natal Depression

  • Action on Postpartum Psychosis is a charity for women and families affected by postpartum psychosis. They offer peer support services, psycho-education and training. 
  • Dads Matter UK offer support for dads and mums suffering from anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress.
  • Maternal Mental Health Alliance is a UK-wide charity and network dedicated to ensuring woman and families affected by perinatal mental health problems have access to care and support
  • PANDAS - provides support groups and a helpline to access information on support services available for Post and Pre-Natal Depression.
  • Tom Allen Centre - offers donation-based counselling for mental wellbeing across a range of services including perinatal counselling for parents and families. You can make a self-referral.

  • Scottish Woman’s Rights Centre provide free legal information, advice, representation and advocacy support to self-identifying women in Scotland affected by violence and abuse.
  • Talk Now is a free counselling service for everyone affected by all types of abuse, includes support for family members.
